Mobile Lab project for the Free University of Berlin
For Freie Universität Berlin, we developed a laboratory facility unlike any other in Germany: a fully metal‑free, modular Mobile Lab, constructed from 16 containers and engineered to meet the highest scientific standards.
This mobile high‑tech laboratory enables the analysis of geological materials, meteorites, and even samples from NASA missions. Thanks to its modular design, the facility can be transported, installed, and adapted quickly and precisely to the needs of cutting‑edge research.
From concept to completion – all from a single source
At MK Versuchsanlagen, planning, manufacturing, assembly, and software development all take place under one roof.
For the Mobile Lab of Freie Universität Berlin, this included:
- Developing a fully metal‑free laboratory environment using high performance plastics
- Constructing a complete laboratory system from 16 modular containers
- Integrating all disciplines, including electricity, water, air, and control technology
- Coordinating the transport of all containers to Berlin
- Final on‑site assembly into a fully operational research facility
The result is a state‑of‑the‑art laboratory that sets new standards in flexibility, precision, and scientific capability.
Inside the creation of the Mobile Lab
In the video, Heiko Schmidt (MK Versuchsanlagen) and Prof. Dr. Harry Becker (Freie Universität Berlin) share exclusive insights into the background, challenges, and scientific goals of this exceptional project.
A laboratory that drives scientific discovery
With this Mobile Lab, a unique research infrastructure has been created in eastern Germany—available not only to Freie Universität Berlin but also to external research partners.
The project demonstrates how innovative engineering and scientific excellence come together to enable new possibilities in mobile laboratory solutions.
